On June 14, 1846, some settlers marched on the Mexican garrison and over took the appointed leader. They then issued a proclamation which declared California to be a Republic independent of Mexico. The settlers hastily designed a flag depicting a grizzly bear and a five pointed star over a red bar and the words "California Republic." The grizzly bear was to symbolize great strength. The lone star refered to the lone Star of Texas. Soon after it was learned that Mexico and the US were already at war, this flag was replaced by the American Flag. The Bear Flag was adopted as California's State Flag in 1911.
