This Jolly Roger flag (12in x 18in and up) is Anco-dyed on Nyl-Glo 100% Solarmax(TM) nylon and finished with white canvas headings and brass grommets.
The Jolly Roger flag is depicted on a black background with a white design of a skull and two crossbones. It was commonly associated with the flag flown on the ships of pirates.
No one knows the origin of the name Jolly Roger for the pirate flag. However, the Jolly Roger, Old Roger, or just plain Skull and Crossbones is the definitive symbol of the pirate. It is thought to have come from joli rouge meaning pretty/beautiful red. It is a French description of the bloody banner flown by early privateers.
No matter the origin of the name of these flags, it is unmistakeable that they were designed to strike mortal terror in the hearts of the pirate's intended victims. They often featured skeletons, daggers, cuttlasses, or bleeding hearts on white, red, or black fields. The skull and crossbones motif first appeared around 1700 when French pirate Emanuel Wynne hoisted his fearful ensign in the Caribbean -- embellished with an hourglass to show his prey that time was running out. |
